Supported currencies and how exchange rates work
Which currencies work
Varuno stores amounts in any ISO currency. Ten currencies display with their dedicated symbols — SGD, USD, INR, EUR, GBP, JPY, AUD, MYR, CNY and THB — and all others display as their three-letter codes.
The default base currency is SGD, and you can change it at any time under Settings → Region/Currency.
How exchange rates work
- Rates are daily mid-market rates from an exchange-rate service (open.er-api.com).
- The request contains your base currency code and nothing else — never a balance or transaction. Your IP address is visible to the service inherently, as with any internet request.
- Rates are cached on-device, so day-to-day use works without constant connectivity; refreshing rates needs a connection.
When rates are missing
Varuno shows incomplete states honestly instead of silently pretending:
- “Incomplete — no CCY rate” on a total means the rate service was unreachable or the currency is unusual. Totals self-heal on the next successful refresh. If it persists for a major currency, contact support with the currency code.
- “Set in USD — open and save again” on a budget means you changed your base currency after creating the budget. Varuno flags the budget instead of silently reinterpreting the number — open it and re-save to confirm the amount in the new base currency.
Changing base currency
Changing base currency triggers a rate re-fetch and re-values displays. Your history is never rewritten — original amounts stay exactly as you entered them.
